Mine's pretty smooth just from the usual steel wool treatment when cleaning every few weeks. But the thing that makes it non stick in my opinion is the seasoning process.
Once you've put some oil on it and cooked it in, it becomes nonstick. At least until you burn something on it, then it becomes 'stick' again.

Another note: If I do any sand blasting for other members, I don't intend on making any $$$. Something to offset the cost of tools that I had to purchase would be nice.
Mark's correct. Sand blast 'em, use 'em and they'll go brown again. What I see as the benefit, removing 50 years, give or take, of someone else's **** ! A fresh start, to maintain as you see fit.
No promises here folks. What you see itswhat I've produced, untested but pretty! I am working on testing my surfaces. Maybe I'll even be able to produce another opinion, other than mine, of the results.

Yes, the griddle covers are backed by asbestos. It looks like a layer of corrugated cardboard.
To remove, wet it down with water. Let it soak. Remove it into a plastic bag and put it in a landfil for your grandchildren to deal with.
